Background
Shera was one of the mechanics working on Shin-Ra 26, a rocket that would make Cid Highwind, the pilot, become the first man to go to outer space.
Shera is a very careful person, and she has always been concerned about Cid. Even if he told her to stop checking the oxygen tanks, she continued to do so, claiming that the test results were not satisfactory. Tank number eight was, in fact, defective but Cid wouldn't hear it.
They went ahead with the launch and realized too late that there was someone still working on the rocket. The intercom system was activated and Cid spoke to Shera from the main control room, warning her of the danger; if she stayed so close to the engine she would be burned to death by the extreme heat.
Despite the mortal danger, Shera continued working, valuing the success of the launch over her life. This wasn't simply the launch of a rocket, this was Cid's dream, and Shera assured him that she 'didn't mind' the consequences.
After a moment of hesitation, Cid aborted the launch and saved Shera's life, but by doing so he lost his dream. The space program was cancelled and the Shin-Ra 26 remained on the ground, tilted from the failed launch, and becoming more rusted with every passing day.
Blaming herself for all of this, Shera decided to live her life for Cid. When we first meet her upon arriving in Rocket Town, she appears to be living with Cid and taking care of the house work. Although, because he still blames her, Cid doesn't exactly appreciate her work as much as he should.
When Cid's airplane, Tiny Bronco, crashes as a result of an accidental takeoff after Cloud's group fights with Palmer who is trying to steal it, Cid joins the group. When asked about Shera, it is clear that, at this point, he doesn't like the idea of people assuming they are married.
Later, Cloud's group, along with Cid, return to Rocket Town to recover the huge materia that is to going be rammed against meteor aboard the rocket. Holding on to his dream, Cid attempts to recover the rocket, but Palmer launches it with Cid, Cloud and one more friend aboard; this depends on who you have in your team, I had Vincent.
Not all is lost, even if the autopilot is locked and the rocket is doomed to crash with meteor; there is still hope to make it out alive in an escape pod. After the huge materia is taken care of, Cid and company head off to the escape pod, but an explosion traps Cid under a pile of debris and he realizes that the tank that blew up was the one Shera was trying to fix during the first launch.
Cid tries to convince the others to go on without him and finally realizes that Shera was right. Cloud and Vincent (or who ever you bring along), attempt to free Cid but the debris is too heavy, that is when Shera arrives and reveals she tagged along in the rocket to help. Together they free Cid and head off to the escape pod.
As they head back to the planet, Cid looks out the window admiring space, having finally achieved his dream.
Eventually, Cid and Shera get married and he names his new airship after her.
