Southern Realm – Notios Kingdom
Calliope's Free-for-All System
Queen Calliope, unlike her sister’s altered feudal system, prefers to keep any sort of social system to a minimum. She allows her civilians to do as they please without any sort of rank, only requiring that they take an oath as a child that they will listen to their Queen whenever she has orders. If a civilian refuses to take this oath, she forces them to leave the faction immediately. Like most Northerners who are sent into exile, the Southerners find themselves upon Ygros Swamplands.
There is not much of any sort of orderly system; this could be the reason for such a vast amount of slums in each city. Any sort of chaos is generally not taken care of in addition since only Calliope represents any sort of law enforcement and believes nobody else should have such power except for her. Although this may seem like a generous idea to try and shield her citizens from corrupted officials, she will of course never have the time to filter out the scoundrels of Notios Kingdom.
Much like her sister, Calliope prefers to see herself in command versus a King husband, she prefers for him to simply help her in gaining the country’s support. A Southern Queen’s husband acts as a spokesperson and business partner for his wife more so than a romancer, although the Southern Queens have been known to show love and compassion towards their partner more so than the Northerners in the past. Queen Calliope although, does not plan on marrying due to her independent nature and desire to prove that men are unneeded in her court.
About 80% of the Southerners live in the slums, consisting of cramped wooden apartments and tents for merchants in hopes of selling their goods. There is much crime in these areas like rape to the frequent robberies. Queen Calliope tries as best as she can to “inspect” the slums but fails drastically.
Most of the Notios Kingdom’s mainland is built underground even if the sky is generally in an eternal evening for the Southerners. Adorned with colorful neon lights, booming music, and oak trees, the Notios Kingdom is quite peculiar. To a Northerner, the Notios Kingdom would appear almost disgustingly overwhelming; the under cities of the south are full of bright lights and oddly enough, trees beneath the ground. Tea candles are placed on each tree in order to illuminate the city with other decorations too, ranging from bells with witty messages tied to them and to iron buckets of water beneath the trees for the local pets to enjoy.
The Notios Kingdom is a world of indigo and darkness, making it an ideal place to battle upon as they could care less about their lands above ground. They also know that the Northerners would never brawl in their under cities, which are too dark for them.
Above the underground cities and towns resides a veil of much forest and nature. Little white and yellow blooms cascade over the abandoned stone pathways and lanterns, much like the under cities, are lit at all times. Few southerners live on the land and the few who do tend to be farmers with lofty windmills above their homes, most wealthy. Their wealth comes from providing the best food to the under cities, ones that have been touched by moonlight for once.
Southerners tend not to leave their kingdom’s mainland as well, because their eyes are so well-adjusted to the darkness that their vision is not the best in daylight. With eternally widened pupils, their eyes are quite sensitive although readjust overtime to the newfound light. Even their Queen Calliope dreads going to the various islands that belong to the Notios Kingdoms as she is not used to the brightness she must endure.
The Appearance of a Southerner
Hair ranging from brunette to deep red to jet black, the tresses of a Southerner remain dark from not exposing his or herself to the sun. To clash with the dark hues of their hair, their skin is a pale white generally, although it can be a light pink too. For both genders, their hair is normally kept long to warm them from the natural coolness of the underground cities. The Southerners tend to be taller than the Northerners, standing about a foot taller than them mostly with delicate, thin bodies. Their pupils always appear dilated, which they pride themselves in as wider pupils mean looking more attractive and youthful. Their philosophy on pupils could be a reason as to why they rare choose not to marry the light-haired Northerners. Make-up too seems to be popular in the Notios Kingdom, with dark eyeliner framing their eyes to accentuate their enlarged pupils, red and pink painted lips, and blush to pinken their pallid faces.
The women of the Notios Kingdom adorn their bodies with exotic cloths of all sorts, usually in a darker color to help keep them warm. Southern women also adorn their hair with a variety of odd hairstyles to keep their lengthy hair out of their way; some of the wealthier women even reveal their status with eccentric hair ornaments, from trinkets of gold to scarlet lotuses to seashells. Unlike the Northerner’s tall shoes, the women of the south generally wear any sort of shoe that is easy to saunter in and comfortable. After all, walking upon dirt and granite paths is not an easy feat in platform shoes. Backless sandals are most often seen on women, some even wear bells and other strings tied around their feet for decoration. If a woman is very wealthy, she normally wears cloths of black, gold, and pale purple to show her status in addition to the ornaments she adorns her hair with. Women wear blush, paint upon their lips, and much dark eyeliner to flatter their pale, delicate features, whether rich or poor.
Men too prefer to adorn themselves in dark clothing, put instead of the usual dark purple cloths for women, they prefer a navy blue shade. Above their tunics and tight pants to warm their legs, they wear a mantle and/or robe usually fashioned in an abstract form and tied with a sash. Notios Kingdom men wear gloves quite frequently too that match their sashes often and calf-high boots that overlap the pants. They do not wear as much make-up as the women, preferring to keep to a minimum on dark eyeliner without anything else. Wealthier men show off their prosperity by wearing rounded hats with striking designs on it, to catch the attention of any citizen nearby.
Southerners vs. Everyone Else
Honestly, the Southerners could not really care about anyone else. Laid back, liberal, and easygoing, they allow anyone into their country if wanted and allow people to do as they please. The pacifists of Lyrica, they are the first to try to negotiate with the leader of the opposing place or try and avoid the battle as long as possible.
The Notios Kingdom is very lax and passive compared to the Boreios Kingdom but when it comes to the issues of the south, Calliope is anything but adamant when reacting. The South believes that country issues should stay to one’s country and not linger elsewhere thus they never bring their problems anywhere else and refuse to tolerate anyone else’s qualms, whether from another country or galaxy.
